This week, as the ICANN 50 conference convenes in London, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced that over 300 new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) have now been delegated. For sure, the expansion of the Internet is well under way and over 1,300 additional new gTLDs could become available within the next few years. Representing the interests of brand owners, INTA has participated in the ICANN process since the very beginning and has continually underscored the need for brand owners to understand the ramifications of a growing Domain Name System (DNS). Indeed, one of the Association’s key tasks throughout this process has been to keep INTA members informed and updated.
The matter of the new gTLDs was, of course, a hot topic at last month’s INTA Annual Meeting in Hong Kong and was covered in the Annual Meeting educational program. Sarah B. Deutsch (Verizon Communications, USA), Vicky Folens (Deloitte, Belgium) and Kristina Rosette (Covington & Burling LLP, USA), who spoke during a session entitled “Trademarks and New Generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs): An Update,” met again the following day to discuss the current status on the new gTLD rollout with a focus on the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH), the central repository for verified brands that was created to provide protection for brands in the new gTLD program.
As in the educational session, each of these speakers expressed a unique and valuable perspective on the topic. As general counsel at Verizon, one of world’s largest telecommunications companies, Sarah spoke from the viewpoint of a brand owner, while Kristina, of counsel at Covington & Burling LLP’s Washington, DC, office, shared her experiences at a practice that focuses on domain name, Internet, and trademark matters. Vicky, on the other hand, is Worldwide Project Manager at Deloitte, the financial services company appointed by ICANN to provide Clearinghouse Verification Services for the TMCH, and so she was able to speak on behalf of the TMCH.
We recorded their conversation, and together, these three experts provide excellent practical advice, especially concerning the TMCH. Login here to view this must-see video.
