A bill for amendment of the trademark law, which introduces protection for non-traditional trademarks, has been submitted to the Diet, and the new trademark law will come into effect on April 1, 2015. In the bill, a unique wording is used for defining trademarks, trademark use, absolute grounds for refusal, functionality and restriction of trademark right. A key person, involved in the current amendment of the trademark law,will discuss a range of protections offered for non-traditional trademarks under the new trademark law.
