The federal government has introduced sweeping changes to Canadian trade-mark legislation and has recently released a consultation paper on the proposed Trademark Regulations. The consultation period ends November 30, 2014. The proposed changes will dramatically impact Canadian trade-mark practice and represent a fundamental shift to our law. Come discuss the amendments and what they mean to brand owners and the Canadian trade-mark professionals who represent them.

Cynthia Rowden is a partner at Bereskin & Parr LLP and heads the firm’s Trademarks practice group.  Cynthia was previously a member of the Board of Directors of the International Trademark Association (INTA), and is currently a member of its Trademark Office Practices Committee (TOPC). Just this month, Cynthia will be receiving the 2014 INTA President’s Award. For both IPIC and INTA, she has been involved in reviewing, commenting and presenting to the government on new trademark legislation dealing with counterfeits and other changes to the Trade-marks Act.

Scott MacKendrick is a partner with Bereskin & Parr LLP and a member of its Litigation practice group. Scott practices in all areas of intellectual property law, with a focus on litigation. He is currently, and also has been, an active committee member for a number of IP organizations, including the INTA. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto law school. He is also an active volunteer at the University of Toronto and chairs its College of Electors.

Coby Schneider is a senior lawyer with Goodwin McKay. Coby has a breadth of knowledge beyond the legal, having experience as a designer and educator and having implemented programs to make IP accessible to startup businesses. Coby is registered as a trade-mark agent in Canada and was called to both the Alberta and Ontario Bars. Coby is a Fellow of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada and has served on several IPIC committees. As well, she is presently a member of INTA’s Canadian Roundtable Subcommittee.
