Geographical Indications: The United States’ Perspective

This article examines:

  • The history, economics, and politics underlying the debate between the owners of geographical indications (GIs) and trademark rights;
  • The U.S. protection system for GIs, essentially via a certification trademark regime;
  • Collective marks and appellations of origin as further means of protecting GIs in the United States; and finally
  • The prospects for reconciliation of the competing policy interests underlying GIs and trademarks.
