Toronto was named after the Huron word for "meeting
place" – centuries ago, it served as a center
for Native Americans, French traders and a British military garrison.
Today, the city still serves as a meeting place, as one of the most
diverse cities in the world. More than 100 languages and dialects are spoken in Toronto,
and the city's myriad ethnic neighborhoods are famous for their eclectic
