On December 7, 2015, the Indian Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks (CGPDTM) joined “TMclass.”
When applying to register a trademark, applicants need to describe the goods and/or services for which trademark protection is sought. TMclass is a free online tool that aids applicants in searching, translating, and classifying goods and services according to terms that appear in the classification databases of each of the offices participating in the TMclass initiative. Using terms appearing in the database of a particular trademark office is likely to be beneficial, as objections on the specification may be reduced, rendering the process of registration that much faster. Specifically, TMclass enables an applicant to:
- Search for goods and services descriptions (terms) and find out which class they are in before applying for trademark protection.
- Check if a list of goods and services in a given language appears in the database of a participating trademark office with the same working language.
- For any word(s) typed in, goods and services classification terms can be found that contain that word or those words, and the translations for the terms in the EU language of one’s choice.
With the India’s trademark office on board, TMclass now contains data from 57 participating offices and offers users the opportunity to search and translate terms to and from 40 available languages. This integration is a result of the EU-INDIA Intellectual Property Cooperation (IPC-EUI) project promoting collaboration between the European Union, the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market, and the CGPDTM.
