Session 3—Big Data and IP: What to Own, What to Use, What Can Be Misused
2021 What’s Next for Brands: A View from Europe Conference
March 23, 2021 | 3:00 pm-3:45 pm CET
With the proliferation of new technologies, the amount of data that can be created, tracked, leveraged, and exchanged has grown exponentially.
Twenty-five years after the EU passed its Data Directive, data is an immense source of innovation and positive development for health, infrastructures, insurance, and other sectors that have a great impact on people. New businesses are being created based on the analysis of data that has been collected for years.
But many questions remain. What are basic concepts of big data? What is the current state of relevant EU legislation? How can we successfully navigate the issues faced by brand owners to support current business and develop new opportunities.?
A panel of experts will share practical tips with attendees to help them navigate important issues that affect brand owners today, including:
- Overview of key terms such as big data, data lakes, analytics, and algorithms
- Who is entitled to use and exploit data? The one who fed the database or the one who created/obtained the data?
- Is the existing EU legislation on data sufficient? What new directives are in the pipeline?
- How do European Directives and database rights affect businesses based outside of the EU?
- In view of the positive impact on people and communities, should there be exceptions to IP protection of data if the information is found to have a greater public use?
- What new business opportunities are on the horizon?
- What obstacles should you be aware of?
