INTA Comments on Amendment to Uruguayan Trademark Law - International Trademark Association

INTA, together with the Uruguayan National Directorate of Industrial Property, hosted an event on September 27, in Montevideo, Uruguay, titled “Launch of the First Draft of the Integral Amendment of the Uruguayan Trademark Law.” The main purpose of the forum was to discuss the various amendments contained in the first draft of a bill that aims to amend Uruguayan Trademark Law No. 17,011.

Topics focused on the protection of single-color and combined-color trademarks; protection of commercial names and their digital protection; trademark use and trademark infringement; and the current difficulties of pursuing trademark infringement under the current legislation.

INTA Chief Representative Officer, Latin America and the Caribbean José Luis Londoño participated in this event along with members of the Uruguayan Congress, intellectual property agents, and members of the Uruguayan Association of Intellectual Property Agents. Mr. Londoño presented INTA’s position on each topic addressed in the draft of the bill in advance of its approval. He also offered comments provided by INTA’s Legislation & Regulation Latin American Subcommittee, the Non-Traditional Marks Latin American Subcommittee, the Famous and Well-Known Marks Latin American Subcommittee, and the Oppositions and Cancellations Subcommittee.

Meetings at WIPO Headquarters

Mr. Londoño attended the Fifty-Ninth Series of Meetings of the Assemblies at WIPO’s headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, from October 2 to 3. During the event, he met with a number of Latin American Intellectual Property Offices (IPO) officials to discuss current IP issues in the Latin American region. Mr. Londoño spoke with Argentinian IPO President DÁmaso Pardo, Delegate Superintendent for Industrial Property of the Colombian Superintendence of Industry and Commerce IvÁn Mauricio Pinzón, National Director of Industrial Property of the Ecuadorian Intellectual Rights National Service Pablo Santiago Cevallos, Registrar of the Guatemalan National Registry of Intellectual Property Director General of the Mexican IPO Sylvia Ruiz Hochstetter, Director of the Panamanian General Directorate of the Industrial Property Registry Leonardo Uribe Juan Lozano, and Director General of the Peruvian National Institute for the Defense of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property Ivo Sergio Gagliuffi.

International Seminar on Illicit Trade in Santiago, Chile

INTA Associate, Latin America and the Caribbean Agustina Davis attended an international seminar titled “Facing Illicit Trade: solutions from the local scope” in Santiago, Chile. The event, which took place on September 20, was hosted by the Municipality of Santiago, the Chilean National Chamber of Commerce, and the Embassy of the United States of America in Chile.

During the first panel of the event, Mayor of Santiago Felipe Alessandri, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs Lorelei Salas, and Lucia Dammert (University of Santiago de Chile) discussed matters related to illicit commerce as both a regional and global challenge.

The second panel included United States Patent and Trademark Office Intellectual Property Attaché for South America Ann Chaitovitz, Supervising City Attorney Kevin Gilligan, and Director of the Chilean National Institute of Industrial Property Loreto Bresky. The speakers discussed trademark infringement, illicit commerce and counterfeit products, and how the authorities face and fight these infringements, considering that collaboration and coordination of all public, private, and social institutions is essential.

INTA Unreal Campaign Partnership with COMEDUC Continues Its Work in Chile

The Unreal Campaign continued its mission with INTA members Álvaro Agurto (Carey, Chile), Stefani Baeza (Carey, Chile), Andrea Lobos (Andes IP, Chile), Rodrigo Sammut (Andes IP, Chile), Paz Marambio (CMS Carey & Allende, Chile), and Ms. Davis, making 15 Unreal Campaign presentations-extending the campaign’s outreach to an additional 908 students from mid-September to mid-October.
