Egypt Policy Dialogue Focuses on Brand Protection Advocacy and Training

Published: March 22, 2023

INTA led a delegation to Cairo, Egypt, on March 5, 2023, to meet with officials from customs, the police, the consumer protection agency, and the intellectual property (IP) office to promote and improve IP protection in the region. The event set a positive tone and was attended by several local INTA members, who worked collectively with the public sector on knowledge sharing and best practices in the field of IP protection, and INTA members were educated about current challenges and obstacles in the region.

Middle East Global Advisory Council Co-Chair Munir Subboh (BSA Ahmad Bin Hezeem & Associates LLP, United Arab Emirates) and INTA Middle East Consultant Charles Shaban kicked off the policy dialogue with an introduction that focused on building respect for IP rights and other priorities in the field of advocacy, such as best IP practices, enforcement, and strengthening the partnership between public and private sectors. The event went on to cover INTA Trademark Model Law Guidelines, best practices for customs procedures, enforcement in free trade zones, and dealing with online and cyber infringement of IP rights and trademarks, among other matters. During a session on well-known trademarks, law enforcement officials received guidance on how to scrutinize the background, value, and status of famous marks.

The speakers trained the participating officials on behalf of more than eight well-known international and regional brand owners from various industries, including media and entertainment, sportswear, auto spare parts, industrial products, watches, and food products.
