New York, NY—January 10, 2018
—The International Trademark Association (INTA) announces the election of Tish Berard as the 2018 President of the Association and Chair of its Board of Directors. Ms. Berard, formerly Vice President and General Counsel for Hearts On Fire Company, LLC, headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, takes on this role after having served on INTA’s Board since 2011.

Her term coincides with the start of INTA’s 2018‒2021 Strategic Plan, which aims to promote the value of trademarks and brands, reinforce consumer trust, and embrace innovation and change.

“I am honored to partner with INTA as we work toward prioritizing the key directions of our new Strategic Plan, while remaining laser focused on our mission to strengthen trademark protection, achieve harmonization of trademark laws, and continue advocacy for effective enforcement mechanisms around the world,” said Ms. Berard.

As one of her goals during her presidency, Ms. Berard will seek to advance trademark protection for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). She has assembled a Presidential Task Force to explore what it means to be an SME from different geographic regions, to assess the interest of SMEs and entrepreneurs in intellectual property (IP), and to identify effective communication strategies for conveying the importance of IP to these groups.

INTA CEO Etienne Sanz de Acedo said the Association welcomes Ms. Berard’s leadership and applauds her commitment to achieving the objectives set forth in INTA’s Strategic Plan.

“We are delighted that Ms. Berard will help usher in a new era of innovation and change as we seek to amplify safety and security for consumers and promote the important role that trademarks and brands play in the global economy,” he said.

At Hearts On Fire, Ms. Berard was responsible for all legal matters, including maintaining the diamond company’s extensive international trademark portfolio and enforcing its intellectual property (IP) rights. Ms. Berard currently serves as an independent contractor for Hearts On Fire and represents the company as its INTA designee.

Prior to joining Hearts On Fire in 2006, Ms. Berard practiced complex civil litigation and bankruptcy law with the Boston firm of Bodoff & Slavitt and was an IP practitioner and litigator with the international law firm of Squire, Sanders & Dempsey in Phoenix, Arizona. Ms. Berard earned her J.D. from the University of Utah College of Law and her B.S. in pre-law from Utah State University. She is also an ASQ Certified Six Sigma Green Belt and a Certified Diamontologist.
