Chilean Attorney Receives International Trademark Association Membership Champion Award for Efforts in Region
Published: November 20, 2019
This award is a new honor given to one or more individuals who help grow INTA membership, increase awareness of INTA, and promote member benefits, demonstrating their combined passion for trademark and related intellectual property law and their commitment to INTA through exceptional efforts.
When INTA opened its Latin America and the Caribbean Office in Santiago in 2017, Mr. Somarriva immediately reached out to offer his time and local knowledge to help the Association achieve the office’s objectives in Chile.
“Mr. Somarriva has proved invaluable in increasing our visibility in Chile. He attends events with potential members and shares with them his own experiences as an INTA member and how his firm has benefitted from participation in the Association,” said INTA President David Lossignol. “Thanks directly to his efforts, multiple brands have joined INTA, and we’ve expanded our footprint in Chile.”
In accepting the award, Mr. Somarriva said, “I’m honored to receive this award as I believe that all Chilean multinational companies should be INTA members, which is why I help. I think being a member is good for them, good for INTA, and good for Chile as a whole.”
Mr. Somarriva has a law degree from Universidad Diego Portales School of Law. He has 20 years of experience in cases relating to trademarks, patents, industrial designs, litigation, copyright, and unfair competition. In 2018, World Trademark Review named him among Latin America’s leading anticounterfeiting experts.
INTA presented Mr. Somarriva with the 2019 Service Award for INTA Membership Champion on November 19 during the Association’s 2019 Leadership Meeting in Austin, Texas. The Association also presented the award to M.S. Bharath, Senior Partner, Anand and Anand Advocates, Chennai, India, and Mohamed Eldib, Partner, Eldib & Co, Cairo, Egypt.
