INTA Announces Prestigious Volunteer Awards at Annual Meeting Virtual+

Published: November 22, 2021

New York, New York—November 22, 2021—The tradition of volunteering has been an integral part of the framework of the International Trademark Association (INTA) throughout its history. Highlighting this, INTA recently recognized individuals and organizations whose dedication and accomplishments stand out in the field of intellectual property (IP) by presenting them with the 2021 President’s Award, INTA Service Awards, and Tomorrow’s Leader Award.

The global association of brand owners and professionals announced the winners of the prestigious awards during its Annual Meeting Virtual+, a hybrid virtual and in-person event that took place from November 15 to 19. The Meeting attracted more than 3,000 registrants.

The two recipients of the President’s Award are Pravin Anand, managing partner, Anand and Anand Advocates, New Delhi, Delhi, India, and Iris Quadrio, partner, Marval, O’Farrell & Mairal, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Each year, the Association presents the President’s Award to an individual or individuals of a member organization who have, over the course of their careers, made a lasting impact on INTA and its mission and who have made a profound impact on the global trademark community.

Mr. Anand has been a practicing attorney since 1979 when he joined Anand and Anand. His countless accomplishments include several landmark IP cases that have maintained the protection of creatives and led to the extensive growth of India’s IP jurisprudence. Among them are the Ferid Allani case, which paved the way for software patenting in India; the Christian Louboutin case, which protected the famous red sole as a single-color trademark in India; Philips v Amazestore, a landmark judgment on aggravated damages for IP infringers, and many more.

He has been a dedicated INTA volunteer for decades and has served on myriad committees, project teams, and task forces. He was a member of INTA’s Board of Directors from 2006 to 2008.

Ms. Quadrio has been practicing at Marval, O’Farrell & Mairal—the largest law firm in Argentina—as a partner since 1998.  A long-time active member of INTA who served on the Board of Directors from 2006 to 2008, she has a long history of receiving well-deserved accolades for her volunteer work at the Association.

Ms. Quadrio received INTA’s Volunteer Service Award for the Advancement of the Association in 2009 for “guiding the formation and leadership of the Latin America Council,” as well as for her involvement in legislative initiatives and collaborative efforts in the region. Earlier, in 2004, she was recognized with the Volunteer Service Award for Advancement of Committee or Subcommittee Objectives for her role as chair of the Trademark Office Practices Committee, Examination Subcommittee.

INTA’s Service Awards are given in three categories to recognize individuals and organizations that provide exemplary volunteer service to the Association.

INTA awarded the Advancement of Association Objectives Award to Richard Plaistowe, principal associate at Mills & Reeve LLP, Cambridge, United Kingdom. An IP lawyer for nearly 30 years, he has been an invaluable member of the Association’s Brexit Task Force—helping INTA navigate the complex and ongoing IP-related issues involved with the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union by penning articles in the INTA Bulletin, representing the Association at meetings, and participating in policy dialogues. He also serves as a principal editor for the Guide to GIs and Certification & Collective Marks.

Darani Vachanavuttivong, co-managing partner and managing director of the Intellectual Property Department at Tilleke & Gibbins, Bangkok, Thailand, is the recipient of the 2021 INTA Membership Champion Award. As chair of the Asia-Pacific Subcommittee of INTA’s Global Advisory Council, she has dedicated significant time and resources to helping to expand the Association’s profile in Southeast Asia, as well as expanding the membership base in the region.

INTA presented its Members for a Better Society Award to Mastercard International Incorporated, a global financial services corporation located in Purchase, New York. Mastercard has been active in working to better society by supporting the Active Bystandership for Law Enforcement program; launching the True Name initiative; and creating many other diversity, equity, and inclusion, and sustainability initiatives.

Additionally, the Association recognized three outstanding professionals who have practiced trademark law for five years or less with its Tomorrow’s Leader Award: Pedro de Abreu M. Campos, attorney at law at Di Blasi, Parente & Associados, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Agnese Gerharde, an associate at COBALT, Riga, Latvia; and Giulia Maienza, an associate in the Milan, Italy office of Herbert Smith Freehills LLP.

“INTA is extremely fortunate to have volunteers like this year’s award winners. Each one of the recipients, in their own way, has shown unparalleled dedication to the Association’s goals, the intellectual property world, and the advancement of the rights of trademark owners around the world,” said INTA President Tiki Dare (Oracle Corporation, Redwood City, California). “We are proud to honor all of these award recipients.”
