Delegation to Mexico Charts a New Path for Intellectual Property

Mexico City, Mexico, recently became the epicenter of a pivotal dialogue on intellectual property (IP) as a delegation led by INTA CEO Etienne Sanz de Acedo engaged with high-level representatives from the Mexican government, Congress, and the judiciary on January 27 and 28.

As Latin America’s second-largest economy and a hub of creativity and cultural diversity, Mexico is uniquely positioned to lead in innovation and in the protection of intangible assets. The jurisdiction’s clear commitment to increasing investment in innovation and to boosting domestic patenting reinforces this opportunity. However, building a strong IP ecosystem requires more than ambition: it calls for (i) coordinated actions between public and private sectors; (ii) a state-driven strategy that enhances competitiveness; and (iii) the strengthening of key institutions, such as the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) and customs.

The INTA delegation arrived with a well-defined mission to strengthen ties with policymakers and collaborate on strategies to address the most pressing IP challenges. During discussions with legislators, judges, senior government officials, and representatives from the private sector, key issues extended beyond legal frameworks. The fight against counterfeiting, piracy, and the informal economy is not just about regulation: it reflects a broader economic transformation that demands innovative enforcement strategies and cross-sector collaboration.

The rise of digital transformation, the impact of AI, gender equity in IP, and the urgent need to modernize enforcement mechanisms were among the top priorities on the agenda.
