INTA and University of Nairobi, Kenya, Host IP Workshop for Student Innovators

In November, INTA partnered with the University of Nairobi, Kenya, to host a vibrant and impactful workshop for student innovators.

The event began with inspiring remarks from Ayub Giau, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, who emphasized that students are the innovators driving societal progress. He highlighted the importance of understanding intellectual property (IP) protection and expressed gratitude to INTA and the day’s speakers. He also reaffirmed the University’s commitment to fostering collaboration and nurturing a culture of innovation.

Adding to this, Mary W. Knoti, Director of the Innovation & Intellectual Property Management Office, encouraged students to leverage the Office’s resources, underscoring its vital role in supporting student innovators throughout their creative and innovative journeys.

The workshop offered a rich agenda covering a range of critical topics, including the overview and importance of trademarks, the process of selecting and registering trademarks, trademark assignments and licenses, and the Unreal Campaign. A highlight of the workshop was an interactive discussion where participants tried to differentiate between genuine and counterfeit products. The activity sparked a lively conversation on the negative impacts of counterfeit goods, revealing a shared enthusiasm among the students for purchasing authentic products.

The day also included an engaging presentation on the INTA Pro Bono Committee’s current initiatives, including clinics where volunteer attorneys offer free guidance to individuals with genuine trademark concerns. Participants were also introduced to the process followed by the INTA Pro Bono Clearinghouse, which streamlines access to pro bono support.

The workshop concluded with a dynamic Q&A session where students asked thoughtful questions regarding the process of registering trademarks. Participants left with a clearer understanding of how to safeguard their innovations and the resources available to help them navigate the IP landscape.
