INTA Holds First Judges Workshop in the Middle East

Published: June 21, 2023

INTA held its first judicial workshop in the Middle East in Amman, Jordan, on May 29.

Opening the workshop, Dr. Jamal Haroun, Director General of the Jordanian Judges Institute (JJI), thanked INTA and stressed the importance of the workshop for the judiciary, who were encouraged to engage in the discussion and share the unique challenges they face in their daily work.

Joining the event virtually, INTA Director, Brand Enforcement and Sustainability, Iris Gunther, emphasized the importance of the judiciary in intellectual property (IP) rights enforcement and provided an overview of the recent workshops that INTA has held in more than 15 jurisdictions worldwide.

INTA members Justice Muhammad Farrukh Irfan Khan (United Trademark and Patent Services, United Arab Emirates (UAE)), Dr. Benjamin Koch (Lubberger Lehment, Germany), Giselle Reuben (BLP, Costa Rica), and Munir Suboh (BSA Ahmad Bin Hezeem & Associates LLP, UAE), led the workshop alongside local judges Dr. Hosam Lotfi of Egypt and Dr. Nihad Husban of Jordan, sharing INTA’s Model Laws and Guidelines and Board Resolutions outlining INTA’s positions on key issues of IP law and process. The panelists shared information and best practices on topics facing the judiciary, including bad faith, civil and penal enforcement of IP rights, famous and well-known marks, and unfair competition. The judges discussed these and other issues they’ve encountered in previous cases with the panelists.

JJI Director General Haroun presented the shield of the institute to INTA and mentioned that based on the event’s success, he hoped to arrange further workshops covering more advanced IP subject matter, including copyright and new technologies.

INTA would like to thank JJI for its cooperation in hosting this successful workshop and looks forward to cooperating on future workshops and events. Thank you also to our panelists for presenting an engaging and informative workshop.
