INTA Hosts Joint Policy Dialogue with Law Enforcement Authorities in Qingdao, China

Published: August 19, 2025

In August, INTA hosted a training on intellectual property (IP) protection for law enforcement officials in collaboration with the Administration for Market Regulation (AMR), the Public Security Bureau, and the IP Protection Center in the city of Qingdao, on the eastern coast of China’s Shandong Province.

The event brought together law enforcement officials from Qingdao and AMR, along with brand owners and IP professionals. Focusing on enhanced collaboration between law enforcement agencies in the seizure of counterfeit goods, the discussion also delved into a wide range of issues, including fast-track examination of invention patents, protections afforded to trade secrets, and how enforcement agencies can better collaborate with brand owners and online platforms.

The training featured in-depth discussions surrounding the heightened protection for geographical indications (GIs). Notably, Lindesay Low, Deputy Director of the Scotch Whisky Association (United Kingdom) and Chair of INTA’s Geographical Indications Committee, echoed this point, stressing the need for stronger enforcement mechanisms for GIs.

In terms of enforcement coordination, IP rights holders and their legal counsel are encouraged to raise their concerns with public security officials to continue monitoring the case transfer between law enforcement agencies.

This recent customs training in Qingdao has further solidified the productive relationship between INTA and China’s key law enforcement authorities—a partnership instrumental in advancing intelligence sharing, best practices, and collaboration among enforcement agencies at national, regional, and global levels.
