New INTA Report Offers Guidance for Measuring ROI in Anticounterfeiting

Published: August 19, 2025

INTA’s Anticounterfeiting Committee—Policy Global Project Team has released a new resource that reframes brand protection as a strategic business imperative.

The Committee’s report, “Anticounterfeiting and Return on Investment,” provides a comprehensive roadmap for rights holders to quantify the value of their anticounterfeiting efforts—both online and offline—and to effectively communicate that value across their organizations.

Counterfeiting continues to erode brand equity, disrupt supply chains, and threaten consumer safety. Yet, measuring the impact and the success of anticounterfeiting programs remains a challenge for practitioners. This report offers practical guidance on conservative valuation methods, documentation standards, and ROI calculation models that can be tailored to any organization’s needs.

Key highlights include the following:

  • Integrated investigations: The report underscores the importance of combining online and offline investigative strategies. Digital footprints from e-commerce platforms and social media can lead to targeted enforcement actions, including raids and cease and desist orders.
  • ROI frameworks: Detailed formulas and examples help practitioners calculate both “soft” benefits (e.g., brand reputation, customer loyalty) and “hard” benefits (e.g., legal settlements, revenue recovery).
  • Cross-functional collaboration: Success in brand protection depends on internal partnerships across legal, sales, marketing, and operations. The report outlines strategies for building these alliances and aligning them with broader business goals.
  • Continuous review: Recognizing the evolving nature of illicit trade, the report recommends regular reviews of ROI methodologies to ensure relevance and accuracy.

Anticounterfeiting and Return on Investment” is an essential resource for brand protection professionals, legal teams, and business leaders seeking to optimize their anticounterfeiting strategies and demonstrate their impact. By adopting the report’s recommendations, organizations can safeguard their intellectual property while driving measurable business outcomes.
