Record Numbers Enter Latin American IP Moot Court Competition

INTA, the Andean Community Court of Justice (TJCA), and the Inter-American Association of Intellectual Property (ASIPI) are pleased to announce the teams admitted to the sixth annual Latin American Intellectual Property Moot Court Law Competition. The application process, which ran from March 23 to May 31, 2026, drew a record-breaking response from the region’s academic community.

A total of 106 teams registered, comprising more than 500 students from over 70 public and private universities across 12 Spanish-speaking jurisdictions: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Perú, Paraguay, Spain, and Venezuela. This marks the highest level of participation in the competition’s history.

Since its inception, the Latin American Intellectual Property Moot Court Competition has engaged more than 1,000 students from more than 50 universities across 15 countries, establishing itself as the region’s most prestigious moot court competition in intellectual property (IP) law and a key platform for academic and professional development in this field.

The winning team of the 2026 competition will receive a US $3,000 prize, jointly awarded by INTA and ASIPI, along with access to exclusive benefits provided by the organizing institutions, valuable international recognition, and networking opportunities with IP law experts.

“This is a unique opportunity for students to stand out, put their skills to the test, and work on real cases alongside their peers,” said INTA CEO Etienne Sanz de Acedo. “Whether their interest lies in trademarks, patents, copyrights, trade secrets, or any other aspect of IP law, this competition offers a high-level stage to compete and demonstrate their talent—while connecting with leading IP professionals from across the region.”

ASIPI President Matías Noetinger commented: “After outstanding outreach efforts by our three organizing entities, and a brilliantly crafted case by ASIPI’s Academic Committee, it is truly rewarding to see the number of teams that have registered—motivated to explore the fascinating world of intellectual property, and for some, perhaps, to choose it as their life’s calling.”

“The moot court is a useful tool for undergraduate law students and graduates to strengthen their knowledge and professional skills in intellectual property, an area of great relevance in the framework of Andean community law,” added Mario Santos of the TJCA.

Each team will prepare and present legal arguments for a fictional case, developing skills essential for future practice in IP law. In the coming months, the admitted teams will enter the written phase, during which they will submit their written memorials. The general oral rounds, finals, and awards ceremony are scheduled to take place during the last week of October 2026.

The 2025 competition set a record at the time, with more than 70 teams from 50 universities in 14 jurisdictions across Latin America and the Caribbean participating. The team from Universidad Tecnológica del Perú (UTP) emerged as champion.

The Latin American Intellectual Property Moot Court Competition continues the tradition established by INTA’s successful Saul Lefkowitz Moot Court Competition and the Asia-Pacific Moot Court Competition, expanding IP education opportunities for Spanish-speaking students across Latin America and the Caribbean.
