Financial Sustainability Considerations for the Intellectual Property Office of the Future Report

Published: February 21, 2024

IPO Financial Sustainability report coverIn April 2019, INTA launched its first Intellectual Property Office (IPO) of the Future Think Tank. The objective of this think tank initiative was to provide a thought-provoking and holistic reflection on what an IPO might look like in the future, in particular over the next 10 to 20 years. The Think Tank published the IP Office of the Future Think Tank Report in 2020. The Report was subsequently republished in 2022 with a companion checklist that distills the Report’s recommendations into a concise format that can be easily discussed and applied.

Building on the 2020 Report, Financial Sustainability Considerations for the Intellectual Property Office of the Future, the latest Report from the IPO of the Future Think Tank, details the proactive steps intellectual property (IP) offices can take now to achieve and maintain financial sustainability and to evolve and thrive in the future. The goal of the Report is to support IP offices in their quest to provide the best possible services to users, while taking into consideration the economic cycles and industry trends in the use of IP rights.

This Report looks at how IP offices can achieve and maintain financial sustainability, while recognizing the existence of different IP office operating models. It is structured to answer questions such as what the strategic components of leadership are in the financial domain, and what staff skills need to be developed for an IP office to become financially sustainable.

The primary audiences for this Report are both existing and future heads of office and their deputies and senior staff, but anyone interested in the internal working of IPOs will find the Report compelling. The Report can be used to facilitate effective and strategic IPO management, as it offers a variety of best practices to help readers benefit from the Think Tank’s collective experience.
