The Business of Innovation
The theme of the program for the 2024 Annual Meeting is “The Business of Innovation,” which focuses on how creativity, change, and technology are transforming how IP professionals conduct business. The program has two curated tracks: an IP and Innovation Track and a Business Track. The IP and Innovation Track focuses on practical tips and advice from recognized IP professionals in relation to novel IP matters and related areas. The Business Track gives a view on what business leaders expect from IP professionals and offers attendees an opportunity to sharpen their business acumen.
The educational sessions are connected by the idea that innovation is what drives IP protection strategy, and our speakers will provide insights and practical advice on how to navigate this evolving landscape.
To help with scheduling, the educational sessions are divided into a series of “journeys” on different themes. This way registrants can attend all the sessions aligned with their own needs and interests. Sessions will be scheduled at the same time each day to take you through a smaller theme under the larger track.
IP and Innovation Track
IP and Beyond
Focusing singularly on trademarks as an IP attorney is really a thing of the past. This journey is designed to explore trademark-related topics as well as those that are complementary to trademarks, including digital advertising, designs, copyrights, domain name enforcement, green washing, branding, and indigenous rights. These educational sessions will cover in-depth trademark-law-related topics at the intersection between other complementary rights, new consumer trends, ethical considerations, and the ever-changing global marketplace. INTA will be applying for CLE credits for most sessions in the IP and Beyond journey.
A Day in the Life
This journey provides an immersive look into the practical aspects and real-world scenarios surrounding a day in the life for trademark, brand, and IP professionals. Speakers will offer a unique perspective on their daily experiences and the challenges they encounter, providing firsthand insights into their routines, decision-making processes, and problem-solving approaches.
Regional Updates
This journey is a comprehensive overview of the latest developments in trademark law and practice, and intellectual property more broadly within specific geographical regions. These sessions offer a focused exploration of the evolving IP landscape, with a spotlight on regional laws, regulations, and practice shaping the protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights. These regional updates are a must for those doing business in the region or representing clients in the region. INTA will be applying for CLE credits for most regional update sessions.
Capsule Keynotes
This journey offers a condensed and impactful exploration of insights, trends, and thought leadership around INTA’s recent research and Think Tank Reports. Expert speakers will distill the key findings of these thought leadership pieces and share key takeaways on what all brand legal professionals need to know.
Business Track
The Annual Meeting business track will convene IP and non-IP business leaders who share insights into the key success drivers within corporations or law firms. The business track will feature 10+ educational sessions in the Innovation Marketplace. These panels will explore various topics, including digital assets, athlete empowerment, and C-suite conversations on IP counsel, entertainment, DEI, and AI.
We are delighted to present two exclusive business track sessions hosted by our Platinum Sponsors, Tencent (May 19, 10:45 am—11:30 am) and GlobalBlock (May 21, 1:45 pm—2:30 pm). These sessions promise to be insightful and thought-provoking, offering a unique perspective on the business landscape.
No CLE credits will be provided for these sessions.
All times reflected below are in Eastern Time (USA).
While we make our best effort to maintain this schedule, it is subject to change. Please check back regularly for updates.
These sessions may be eligible for CLE credits, pending state approval. Learn more about CLE eligibility.

IP and Innovation | Difficult Conversations in the Workplace
Presented by the Professional Development Committee
We all have conversations in the workplace that we dread, find unpleasant, awkward, or try to avoid. This is particularly so when the matter at stake is important, the outcome uncertain, or our self-esteem may be implicated; for example, asking for a raise, giving a critical performance review, saying no to a colleague who needs assistance with a project, negotiating with opposing counsel, or responding to a client complaint about a bill. We practice the conversation over and over in our head, trying to figure out what to say in advance and then wondering afterwards what we should have said differently. Sound familiar?
Join us for a dynamic and engaging discussion as we explore what it is that makes these conversations difficult, why we avoid them, and why we often handle them poorly. Then, we will learn how to develop an effective approach, mindset, and strategy to make these conversations easier.

IP and Innovation | Domain Enforcement: New Practice Tools for New Challenges
Presented by the Internet and Data Protection Committee
This session will explore new tools that have been developed to request information regarding the owners and administrators of domain names in light of the limitations of WHOIS lookups. As a result of ICANN’s response to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Europe, registrars and registries are no longer contractually required to publish ownership information or contact details including the names of legal entities. Further, there is no central source from which to request information nor is there any guarantee that access will be granted to the requested information. All of the decision making has therefore been left in the hands of the registrars and registries to perform the balancing test that is required under the GDPR and other privacy regimes. To remedy the inability to obtain this information under post-GDPR changes as well as to investigate and remedy abusive registration and use of domain names, new tools have been developed to simplify information requests and create centralized structures for submitting such requests. Our panel for this session will describe and provide insight into the benefits and limitations of some of these tools, such as ICANN’s new Registration Data Request System (RDRS), the Domain Name System Abuse Institute’s (DNSAI) NetBeacon, and the Registrar Stakeholder Group’s (RrSG) Abuse Contact IDentifier (ACID) Tool. The panel will also highlight the current and new tools for enforcing trademark rights in the domain name system. Practitioners will walk away with knowledge of new tools for gathering and reporting information regarding domain name abuse.
For those with questions regarding ICANN’s RDRS pilot, one of the other Registrant Information request services, how to file RDRS requests, or other tools for enforcing trademark rights on the Internet, or if you want to follow-up questions for the Domain Enforcement panel, this session will be followed by an “Office Hour” (5:00 pm to 6:00 pm). Meet and speak with the moderator and panelists plus special guests Dr. Steven Crocker, Founder, Edgemoor Research Institute, Former Chair, ICANN (USA) and Patrick Flaherty, Head of Global IP Law & Policy Group, Verizon (USA).

IP and Innovation | Changing the Game of Fame: How Business and Communication Trends are Reshaping What it Means to be a Famous and Well-Known Trademark
Presented by the Famous and Well-Known Marks Committee
Brand owners face growing challenges protecting their trademarks in today’s global marketplace; this is particularly true for owners of famous and well-known trademarks (FWKMs) who may see the growth in the popularity of their mark outpace their ability to protect it. There is both a lack of harmonization in how trademark systems protect FWKMs and gaps in how those systems determine whether a mark is considered famous or well-known. For example, cross-border e-commerce and social networking communication trends that can propel a trademark to significant recognition even before a mark is used in a jurisdiction are often not understood by local IP offices and/or courts or are treated differently across jurisdictions. The lack of uniform and updated approaches hinders global protection of FWKMs to the disadvantage not just of brand owners but to consumers as well. This session provides a chance for regional and international experts to share overviews of FWKM systems across the world, highlight whether and how these systems reflect today’s business and communication trends, and discuss the challenges faced by FWKM owners—and how INTA and its members can promote change.
